Sergio Roberto Santos Rodrigues (September 22, 1927 – September 1, 2014) was a Brazilian architect and furniture designer. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Rodrigues is considered one of the most important designers of modern Brazilian furniture.

Inspired and influenced by the leading modernist architects of his time, including Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, Rodrigues founded his studio, OCA, in 1955 with a simple mission: to create contemporary furniture adhering the modernist Bauhaus principles but within the Brazilian context.

Along with Joaquim Tenreiro and José Zanine Caldas, Rodrigues was instrumental in transforming Brazilian design and making it known worldwide. His career blossomed in the 50s and 60s, as he created some of the most iconic Brazilian modernist furniture designs, fusing the Brazilian identity into his projects, both in the inspiration and in the use of traditional native Brazilian materials – leather, wood and rattan.

Instead of metal for example, Rodrigues preferred wood, a rich and beautiful resource found in the tropical jungles of the country. Rather than hard lines, he favored curves to address the comfort and needs of his countrymen. In 1961, standing out among 400 designs from 35 different countries, the Mole armchair, won first place in the international furniture competition in Cantù, Italy, before becoming a part of the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York.

“A piece of furniture is not just a shape, not just the material from which it is made, but also something inside it, the piece's spirit. It's the Brazilian spirit. That's Brazilian furniture.” (Sergio)
